This is the most private book in everything Toan Ánh left behind — and the only one he did not write for readers.
His companion of thirty years died on 20 December 1969 at the Grall hospital in Saigon, aged 46, leaving him with their eleven children. Six days later, on 26 December, he began to write. He finished on 14 March 1970 — under three months. It is not a book about her; it is a book addressed to her, calling her "em" from the first page to the last.
In 1970 he took the manuscript to the Chí-Thanh press in Saigon and had it printed at his own expense. It carries no publisher, no cover price and no licence number — he had it printed to give to friends and family, and each of his children kept a copy.

The letter from Nguyễn Hiến Lê
Nguyễn Hiến Lê (1912–1984) was a scholar, translator and essayist with more than a hundred works to his name, and one of the most respected literary figures of the South. He sent this handwritten letter to Toan Ánh after reading Nhớ Thương.

Tôi đã đọc xong cuốn "Nhớ thương" thật là chân tình, có nhiều cảm động cuốn đó làm tôi nhớ cuốn "Phù Linh tục ký" của Trung Hoa. Loại đó càng về sau này càng có giá trị.
Đọc sách tôi thấy chị đảm đang và đúng là hiền thê, hiền mẫu, mà các cháu cũng quý chị lắm. Gia đình anh chị quả là có hạnh phúc.
Trong ba bốn tháng viết, anh đã được sống lại thời xưa với chị, chắc anh viết không thấy mệt, đôi khi chán, như viết những cuốn khác.
Hôm nay tôi đã giao bản cho anh Giản Chi, anh ấy sẽ mang lên Đà Lạt đọc.
